me

How did you get here?
I got out here by the way of networking. I am good friends with Marcelino Alverez’s sister who showed my work to him. An interview and some candy later and I’m here!

Who/what inspires you?
The easy answer is my environment. W+K allows you to really play and learn within these walls. All the work and history here makes you want to do great work.

I’m also inspired by photography. I’m in no way a photographer but beautiful photos make me want to be.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?

Nike, Target, Coke, Laika, Old Spice… Basically all of the current client roster.

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
I used to play a lot of video games, but now that the weather’s really nice I play soccer both indoors and outdoors. Other than that, just hang out with friends or explore more of Portland.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I can’t consume alcohol. I lack an enzyme in my stomach that can’t break down alcohol. My body basically treats it as poison. Awesome.

What do you love to do?
Love making things, hanging out with friends and relaxing.

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Getting paid to do what I love doing.

Check out Kiem’s stuff:

Holy crap he works here!!! YAY!

goodnessPhoto1

How did you get here?
I was lucky and got invited by my good pal Katie McHugh to participate in the Hand Pulled for Haiti poster benefit. The poster sold-out, and the following week I had an interview with Michele. I received some very constructive, and specific feedback on my portfolio, something I’ve never received from an interview, so I revisited my book, and worked extremely hard to fill the holes and address the feedback and came back to show it to a group of studio managers. The effort I spent on refining my book was well worth it.

Who/what inspires you?
I’m inspired by authenticity and genuine enthusiasm in people (Kate Bingaman-Burt). I’m often inspired by work that exhibits high levels of craftsmanship, but I also love stuff that’s just crazy creative and off the wall. I like creative duos and collectives, I find them more interesting than individuals. I like the group of dudes behind Thinking for a Living and all the interesting stuff that seems to be happening with PSU’s Graphic Design department. I went to the big student portfolio show (BE HONEST), and was floored by some of the work, and just the overall vibe of the program. I’m a big fan of the Hugo + Marie roster of artists, especially the talented, and well mannered Micah Lidberg. I’m super excited about the work coming from local duo Script & Seal – Gavin Potenza and Liz Meyer. I’m quite fond of London’s Evening Tweed collective, and NY’s Pencil Factory. Dig those Austin bros at Public School.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
I’m a designer working on Procter & Gamble.

Easy question, what do you do outside of work?
I’m a family guy, and spend as much time as I can with my wife and kids. We spend a ton of time hanging out at the parks. Kids need to run around, and I just enjoy being outside in the setting of kids playing and having fun— reminds me of my childhood, and makes me feel good. It’s a time of reflection and thoughtfulness for me.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I have a Kuncle, or is it Cuncle? You know, a cousin-uncle. My cousin was adopted by my grandparents, is all really. It’s a common Idaho thing. When I was growing up, he was the coolest dude in the world, he was the first guy I ever knew who had a perm, he could shred every Metallica solo on the guitar, and made his own swords. A total badass. You could also say he was an inspiration.

What do you love to do?
Make things. Make music. Skateboard. Parent. Ride bikes. Eat food. Drink beer. Collaborate. Think. Look at pictures in books. Discuss. Listen. I could go on and on…

If you could interview one other person in the studio, who would it be and why?
Steve Denekas. His spirit is ancient and magical.

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
My children, no doubt. In a way, I get to relive my childhood. I get to experience adventure, wonder, and witness how new everything is to them. I’ll never forget the first time I pushed my daughter in a swing, I suddenly realized, this is the first time she’s ever experienced this, and I get to share that with her, along with many more experiences as she grows up. Nothing is better than that.

CVo

How did you get here?
I was picked up from my portfolio show at The Art Institute of Portland a few years ago. Our recruiters made a visit to my table and next thing I knew, I was working on the redesign of oldspice.com the following Monday.

Who/what inspires you?
My boofaces. Friends. Family. Co-workers. Mentors. Pretty much the people I’m surrounded by everyday inspire me.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
I’m part of the digital department and since I’ve been here, I’ve worked on Oldspice.com, Career Builder, Levi’s Go Forth, and my latest was the redesign of wk.com.

What’s outside of work?
I play! :) There is plenty that keeps me entertained. I’ve got my boofaces(booface.com) who I see pretty much everyday and the rest of the booface family who always has something going on. We play in a few different sports leagues: Softball, Flag Football, Tennis, Golf, Kickball… And I also spend much of my time freelancing as well. There’s just never enough time in a day to do it all.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I once drank a whole jug of pickle juice for a free round trip ticket to Vegas.

What do you love to do?
I love being with family and going on random adventures. I don’t care, when or where… As long as it’s not going to terrify me.

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
I moved to Portland.

And what the hell is booface?
I’ve totally dropped that word four times so far without explaining or going into detail of who and what a booface is. booface is a term of endearment used to describe a best friend whom you’d call family. We believe family comes in all different shapes, colors, and sizes – the people who are there when you need love the most. Those are our boofaces. My best friends and I coined this term and created a brand around it. The core belief is to treat friends like family and family like friends. We live this lifestyle day in and day out; supporting each other in every endeavor no matter how small or how big, creative or not. As different as my boofaces and I are, we grew up with the same core value — family first. It’s the idea of going beyond yourself and helping one another out, not for personal gain but for the family. One team one dream. Everyone needs family.

Meet Malia

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

MaliaK_Portrait

How did you get here?
A little bit of hard work.
A little bit of luck.
Demanding to put a name on my cover letter instead of “To whom it may concern.”
And of course, the awesome Joe.

Who/what inspires you?
Nature.
Discovering a new blog I like.
My co-workers/peers.
In terms of people- that is constantly changing.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
I mainly work on EA, and a little bit of Old Spice. I’ve spent a bit of time on The Sims 3 campaign, as well as Dante’s Inferno, and MySims Agents.

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
Sleep.
I enjoy a lot of different random activities… Hiking, camping, sailing, skiing, biking, being a beach bum, playing a terrible game of tennis, eating, drinking, making things– artwork, carpentry, ceramics. You might guess that I don’t get around to a lot of this stuff. So, to be totally accurate, outside of work I eat, drink, and sleep.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I’m from a mountaintop in the middle of nowhere in Northeast Washington. My parents make their own electricity via solar panels and a generator, and my bathroom was an outhouse until I was 9. If you ever need to catch a salamander, or put chains on your car, I’m your girl.

What do you love to do?
Well, for activities, I think I’ve covered that one above.
I do love to work. It might seem weird, but I love being busy, and I love designing, and so, I love my job.

Check out some work done by Malia:

Who/what inspires you?
The TED talks, This American Life, Charles and Ray Eames, Paul Rand’s kids books, Hillman Curtis Artist Series, the old UPS logo. Monitor Mix, Heather Larimer, The Homey Inn, Mission Disctrict, SF, Hitachino Nest White Ale, Gigposters, Bands worthy of Gigposters, anything Chris Ware touches. Nothing Shepherd Fairey touches, Supreme Bowl in LA, Kermit’s life lesson “it’s not easy being green.”

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
officially I work on Old Spice, and EA, unofficially a zine called “user friendly,” anything helping out the 12, WKE, photography, film, paper-maché parties, and the level of the kegs.

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
Try to avoid advertising like the plague.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
Kellogg’s Raisin Bran is an excellent source of fiber.

What do you love to do?
Sarcasm.

One time in an appropriately congratulatory setting, I perfectly executed a jumping high five that was seen by multiple people.

Mumford: Loves Gardening French Rap

Monday, January 4th, 2010

image

How did you get here?
My wife and I went on a road trip from San Francisco to Seattle. We stopped part way in Portland for a few days and fell in love with the city. And as it turned out, I had a cousin in town at the time who offered me a design job at her 2-person shop. She fired me 3 months later and I started knocking on Wieden’s doors. It took me about a year and a half.

Who inspires you?
My coworkers. They constantly give me that stomach pang of envy that says “Why didn’t I think of that?” Inspiration is always just there, I just try to listen.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
I work on Nike, focusing on Hoops and Lance Armstrong.

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
What I do inside is also what I do outside, Basketball and Cycling. And of course, coffee, non-fiction books, films.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I am a Francophile and speak French terribly. I have a modest collection of French Rap albums.

What do you love to do?
I am an amateur vegetable gardener. I love to explore the different varieties of vegetables out there. Currently my favorite is the fig tree in the front of my home. When working with technology each day it becomes attractive to switch gears at home, to have my hands a dig through the soil. It gives perspective. Grounds you (no pun intended).

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Moving to Portland in late 2002. It changed everything and I’m grateful for it.

Here’s some notable Mumford stuff:
