Jason Murray doesn’t work on or in vacuums.

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Check out studio’s own Jason Murray and some of his work.

Q. How did you get here?
Someone told me Portland was great. Another person told me Wieden + Kennedy was great. I was living in LA, hanging out, and thought I’d give it go.

Q. What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
I currently work on Levi’s®. I started out sitting in a hallway, working on Old Spice.

Q. Easy question, what do you outside of work?
Physically, I run. I also collect hand written notes I find on the street. Sometimes at the same time. Mentally, I formulate design projects (for myself), create them (for myself), snicker (to myself), and repeat. I additionally curate a wide ranging set of unfulfilled urls. E.g. eatingwhilerunning, tightsaspants, and hobotomcruise .com.

Q. What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I enjoy to bake. Pies and pastries specifically. My father and grandfather are/were master pastry chefs. My father in the United States, my grandfather in Denmark. I’m Danish.

Q. What do you love to do?
Think, create. Can’t ever turn it off.

Q. Why/how did you choose this profession?
It was my last attempt at a college education. I had initially intended to study veterinary medicine. After a year, I realized I would probably be a horrible vet (it also seemed very boring) so I tried my hand at physical therapy. That wasn’t any more exciting and seemed like much more pressure as I would be working with humans. I had decided to quit school all together, but as I was ready to walk away, I looked into the art & design program. I had always drawn as a kid, mostly sports logos, and thought maybe, possibly, I could make a career out of it. I applied. They let me in.

Q. How long have you been doing this profession?
Around 14 years.

Q. What other types of jobs have you done, not related to your current profession?
Jobs, in chronological order:
Summer camp arts & crafts director for the city of St. Joseph, in Michigan. My parents ran the summer recreation program for over 10 years when I was a kid.

Sales associate at Foot Locker. While spending time at a community college in Benton Harbor, MI, I sold athletic footwear and apparel.

Information Technology Assistant. I made the internet work.

A very short stint at a nursery/arts and crafts store. I knew nothing about plants. I was fired.

Summer maintenance and repair worker for St. Joseph Township. The best job I’ve had or will ever have. I drove a lawnmower with a 76 in. deck, with my shirt off.

Q. What was your first job that was connected to your current profession?
While I was in college, I was the art/design director of a business publication. I used Quark.

Q. What is it that you like/love most about your work?
Collaboration. Nothing great is made in a vacuum.

Q. What is the secret to your success? In other words, if you could boil it all down to one or two things, what would it be?
I don’t believe there is a secret or a magic bullet. “Success” takes hard fucking work.

Q. What other works have been most influential in your professional development?
The Ten Commandments. As a young Catholic boy, coming up in the Midwest, the set design and artistry of that film blew me away. I was mesmerized.

Q. From where (or what) do you draw your energy / inspiration / etc.?
Friends. When they’re pumping out amazing shit and succeeding, it’s inspiring. Makes me work harder.

Q. Has your profession impacted you as a person? In what way(s)?
It’s helped me gain perspective on what the important bits are. The job isn’t important.

Q.”What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?”
I don’t know. I was born?

Keep a lookout for some of his shirts showing up on the Goodness site.

Nishat’s head attracts Roman candles

Friday, April 8th, 2011

How did you get here?
Across the nation, through some hell. Philly to Portland, roughly 2800 miles.

Who/what inspires you?

Being somewhere new

The open road

Beautiful typography

Vintage whatever

The Paris Roubaix

The Giro d’Italia

Hand painted trucks in India

Hand painted signs in general

Epic nature

The Gorillia Biscuits

Cb radios

Paper airplanes

Gothic cathedrals

Pennsylvania Dutch Hex signs

And most of all, people that are really motivated…

Here are some of my most favorite people and or blogs:

http://friendsoftype.com/

http://www.acontinuouslean.com/

http://www.designspongeonline.com/

http://www.ohjoy.blogs.com/

http://nicholashans.com/

http://ovaspray.com/

AND a few documentaries that made my mind melt:

La Course de Tete (Eddie Merckx rules. Total inspiration)

Who is Bozo Texino (about old timers and freight trains)

Harlan County Kentucky (wonderful documentary about union strife in a small coal mining town)

AND this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aDy8BqEuyE&feature=related

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
I work on Target, though have already worked on a bunch of other things too. I love the variety. Bring it on.

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
When my knee isnt hurt (long story): Riding horses, riding bikes (mtb, road, cyclocross), playing soccer, running around. And otherwise I like to spend my time doing a billion other things: drawing, silkscreening, cranking letterpresses and of course hanging with friends, drinking coffee, dancing, rapping Salt N Pepa songs in karaoke and cooking food. Is it too nerdy to include board gaming on this list? Also this:  onedaynever.com which MAYBE one day will get updated and I now write a blog about being new to portland www.newtoportland.tumblr.com

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
My family is mega famous in bollywood! My cousin was on the cover of GQ India!!!!Also  can flip my lower eyelids inside withOUT using my hands. It’s less gross than it sounds.

What do you love to do?
Draw. Print. Explore abandoned placesTake photos w my new Fuji instax (newest polaroid like instamatic!). Dig through vintage shops. Play sports. Talk shit while watching sports. Cook food for friends. Dance all night. In general: have a blast.

If you could interview one other person in the studio, who would it be and why?
I’m too new to know hardly anyone’s name! So, maybe we could make a giant spinny arrow and have everyone stand in a circle around it. Whoever it lands on, that’s who I’m interviewing (because life is chaos). OR we line up everyone in the studio and have a running race. Whoever wins, I want to interview (because I like winners). Or wait…one last idea, I will interview whoever is responsible for drawing the Levis type, if that person is in studio, because that is the kind of stuff I want to be doing!

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Being at the game to witness the Phillies win the World Series in 2008. Life altered.

Check out Nishat’s work below:

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Walker “Silks” Cahall is your man to get stuff done.

I cut paper, make books, print posters, fix things, break things, move things, joke, laugh, draw, print, ship, shop, paint, clean, write, have fun, stay up late, and create.

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
It is a toss up between learning to screen print, and learning to ride a bike.

Presenting your Armageddon cook, Christina.

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

How did you get here?
I had been living in New York for five years and decided I wanted to get back to Portland. One of my old professors put me in touch with Shari Eiesland and I had an informational interview. A year and a half later I finally pulled the trigger and drove across the country with all my stuff and back to my parents house out in Boring. (Yes, Boring) I sent Shari an email saying I was in town and looking for work and an hour later I got a call from Lisa Reinhardt asking me to come chat about Starbucks. It was supposed to be for a months’ worth of work, but 2 1/2 years I’m still here. (Minus a little four-month “sabbatical” when Starbucks went away.)

Who/what inspires you?
Lately I’m loving www.thejealouscurator.com and I find Pinterest.com to have a lot of great stuff on it. I love infographics and buildings that are crumbling and being reclaimed by nature. My coworkers are an endless source of inspiration for all things design and otherwise. It’s fun to see all the crazy stuff that people in the building are working on during their spare time. And watching my sister travel the world (and being able to join her for a quick trip to India) provided more inspiration than I ever thought possible.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
Mostly I work on Levi’s. Which means I spend a lot of time making alphabets out of strange materials and lots of time creating stuff by hand. It’s not a bad gig to get paid to play.

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
I love cooking, especially things that can be made in ginormous quantities and frozen in small containers (such as mini pies, empanadas, dumplings, enchiladas). I’m obsessed with mass food production as though I’m preparing for the apocalypse. I also have been taking pattern making and sewing classes and have successfully designed and produced a piece of clothing that actually fits me. I travel. I work on trying to get weapon-shaped cookie cutters produced for a company that my boyfriend and I are developing. I think about painting but rarely make the time to do it. I help design some tshirts for a friends’ clothing company. I like to train for races – running and swimming.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I lived in a 250sq foot apartment for 3 years. I have enormous flat files that my dad built me that took up nearly half the place. But it still is my favorite apartment.

What do you love to do?
I make stuff, it’s my favorite thing to do, whether that’s cooking, sewing, designing… I love it all. I also like to make lists and cross things off.

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Moving to New York where I learned how to really go after what I want and to eliminate a lot of the bullshit that I don’t want, and met some of my favorite people. And then moving back to Portland.

See what goes into Christina’s flat file:

Frank Herbert calls Keith, “Spice”

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

keith

How did you get here?
I moved to Portland, and needed a job. Never having had any IT experience, but having worked with Apple computers for some time, I figured I would apply for the entry-level Mac Technician job posted on craigslist. Two years later, shazzam, here I am in Studio as a support technician.

Who/what inspires you?
I’m inspired by humans. Look at what we have: a dump truck that lifts massive steel containers off the street and dumps their contents into a large, moving receptacle? Who the f*** came up with the hydraulic system needed to pull that off?!? Or how about a bridge. Yes, a bridge. “Oh, we’ll never get across that canyon.” Bullshit. Humans are amazing, both in their constructive and destructive capability, and I’m flabbergasted daily by how we take raw material and turn it into some ‘thing’.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
Computers. The Unix kernel. Programs that make adminstering systems easier. I also work on my mean tan (which, incidentally is quite tame).

What is outside of work?
This sounds totally lame, but I like to work. Not necessarily on work stuff, but on anything that makes me better at what I do—assimilate information. It’s all about the information, Martin!

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I”ve read the original Dune series four times through (and two times through 14 of the Dune books, in chronological order). I also have a tattoo that reads “The Golden Path” on my wrist that is written in Fremen.

What do you love to do?
I love to dream about what I’d do if I won the lottery. I’d probably learn to drift.

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Going to see the Oakland A’s with my dad when I was eight—my mom and sister were out of town at a baton twirling competition, and my dad and I went to Oakland and bought scalped tickets to see the A’s play. That was the time of the Bash Brothers, Eck, and the Hendersons (not related). That was the first time I ever really hung out with my dad.

Jennifer Wright = Vanilla Ice

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

jjwright_pic

How did you get here?
A blind email to HR > a little Liz Lemon humor > some posters > the kindness of a few souls > a two-week notice > a lot of goodbyes > and a completely overpacked U-Haul coming from Austin, TX.

Who/what inspires you?
My friends, my coworkers, the Dutch, tacos, wittiness, new technology, Steinbeck, New Guinea’s birds-of-paradise and people who can eat their own shoes

Spirited work of Ms. Wright.
What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
I thank the moms with P&G. But I jump on all sorts of projects when things pop up.

Easy question, what do you do outside of work?
Explore Portland, freelance a bit, try to be less awkward on my bike, listen to Radiolab, look up recipes on homesicktexan.blogspot.com  (I’m not homesick, just hungry) and do a little drawing, painting and printmaking. I also help run an online community, SwapYourShop.com, that helps creative professionals work and live in another city or country on a temporary basis.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
My freshman year of high school I ran for Student Council and rapped a rendition of Ice Ice Baby to 400+ people. I had back up dancers and everything. That was probably the most out of character thing I’ve ever done.

What do you love to do?
Make things with my hands, sit around fires, listen to good stories over beers, talk shop (guilty), strike things off to-do lists, kayak in the heat of the summer, crawl around in dried up creeks, dwell on my old scooter and visit my folks in New Mexico.

If you could interview one other person in the studio, who would it be and why?
Is the invisible monkey still around?

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Falling in love with a city. I intend to do that again. And the day I discovered migas.

Check out the spirited work of Ms Jennifer.

This is a verifiable Sam interview

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

xeroxsam

How did you get here?
After three interviews, and a string of events that involved hundreds of used tea bags, an instigator with no reserve, and a business card exchange with Shari Eiesland at Portland’s Sand in the City Event. And maybe luck from a few sigils drawn on my arm.

Who/what inspires you?
Creative conceptual designs! …grids, patterns, naturally deteriorating textures, foreign accents & dialect monologues, 3×3 articles, paper stitching, love letters, new media, the golden rectangle, number tattoos, letterforms, architectural floor plans, maps, super wrinkly old people, office supply stores, Egyptian hieroglyphs, typography books, cave paintings, dirty things that don’t smell…

…Jasper Johns, Diebenkorn, Schiele, Picasso, Klimt, Robert Weaver, Charlie Harper, Mark English, Gary Kelley, Melinda Beck, Polly BeckerŠMark Bradford, Alexander Girard, Sanna Annukka, Aesthetic Apparatus, Hammerpress, Yeehaw Industries, The Heads of State, David Plunkert, Roman Klonek, Edel
Rodriguez, Jason Holley, Alex Kanevski, Penelope Dullaghan, Daniel Chang, James Jean, Tatsuro Kiuchi, Jason Holley, Sam Weber, Sterling Hundley-ahhhh!
there’s so many!

Oh, and especially my many many talented friends.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
Target mostly. Every once in a while Coke, Dodge, EA, Levis…

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
life maintenance. I strive for a balance between social and homebody modes, sleep (or try), paint, smile at mountains, draw, think, think more, read books, drink on rooftops, movie-watch; laugh in mirrors, search for sunshine.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
There’s a rumor that one of my brother’s is in the CIA, and the other is an actor. At least one is verifiable.

What do you love to do?
I love getting excited about smart concepts. I love being messy with paint. I love to make art. I love to layer dirty textures that look to me like they’ve existed for years. I love to make deadlines for myself. I love to make other people make deadlines for me. I love attaining the satisfaction that comes from creating a body of work with a self-planned theme, materials, process‹striving to make something above-average in calculation. I love meeting smart people. I love hearing people talk about their passions. I love to travel and experience new things. I love spending time with my family. I love experiencing deep-down, uncontrollable laughter. I love smiling back at nice people.

If you could interview one other person in the studio, who would it be and why?
David Kennedy has the BEST stories. He’s in studio, right?

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
the choices I’ve made to move to new cities, to travel to foreign cultures, to take challenges that scare me, to continue education, and every art epiphany I’ve ever had.

Thanks for asking!

See some sweet stuff from Sam.
