me

How did you get here?
I got out here by the way of networking. I am good friends with Marcelino Alverez’s sister who showed my work to him. An interview and some candy later and I’m here!

Who/what inspires you?
The easy answer is my environment. W+K allows you to really play and learn within these walls. All the work and history here makes you want to do great work.

I’m also inspired by photography. I’m in no way a photographer but beautiful photos make me want to be.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?

Nike, Target, Coke, Laika, Old Spice… Basically all of the current client roster.

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
I used to play a lot of video games, but now that the weather’s really nice I play soccer both indoors and outdoors. Other than that, just hang out with friends or explore more of Portland.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I can’t consume alcohol. I lack an enzyme in my stomach that can’t break down alcohol. My body basically treats it as poison. Awesome.

What do you love to do?
Love making things, hanging out with friends and relaxing.

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Getting paid to do what I love doing.

Check out Kiem’s stuff:

How did you get here?
I was picked up from my portfolio show at The Art Institute of Portland a few years ago. Our recruiters made a visit to my table and next thing I knew, I was working on the redesign of oldspice.com the following Monday.

Who/what inspires you?
My boofaces. Friends. Family. Co-workers. Mentors. Pretty much the people I’m surrounded by everyday inspire me.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
I’m part of the digital department and since I’ve been here, I’ve worked on Oldspice.com, Career Builder, Levi’s Go Forth, and my latest was the redesign of wk.com.

What’s outside of work?
I play! :) There is plenty that keeps me entertained. I’ve got my boofaces(booface.com) who I see pretty much everyday and the rest of the booface family who always has something going on. We play in a few different sports leagues: Softball, Flag Football, Tennis, Golf, Kickball… And I also spend much of my time freelancing as well. There’s just never enough time in a day to do it all.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I once drank a whole jug of pickle juice for a free round trip ticket to Vegas.

What do you love to do?
I love being with family and going on random adventures. I don’t care, when or where… As long as it’s not going to terrify me.

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
I moved to Portland.

And what the hell is booface?
I’ve totally dropped that word four times so far without explaining or going into detail of who and what a booface is. booface is a term of endearment used to describe a best friend whom you’d call family. We believe family comes in all different shapes, colors, and sizes – the people who are there when you need love the most. Those are our boofaces. My best friends and I coined this term and created a brand around it. The core belief is to treat friends like family and family like friends. We live this lifestyle day in and day out; supporting each other in every endeavor no matter how small or how big, creative or not. As different as my boofaces and I are, we grew up with the same core value — family first. It’s the idea of going beyond yourself and helping one another out, not for personal gain but for the family. One team one dream. Everyone needs family.

1.
How did you get here?

Weird things inspires me, like ants carrying a dead lizard away, folks chaining themselves to trees, architecture, digital artwork from Peter Jaworowski .

Outside of work I hang out with friends, and also try to catch up on my drawing skills, hike, bike (if I don’t feel lazy that day), and watch documentaries.
5.
What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
The path to my heart is paved with macaroni and cheese :^)

why?
I would interview Cari Vander Yacht, because she’s so funny! And her ugly picture Wednesday are hilarious. http://cvydesign.wordpress.com/

Well I grew up in a house with three brothers, and we always did the typical boy stuff. Such has fighting each other, pranks, and more fighting. But having a little sister is one of the best thing that happened to me.

Arthur and Tanq love Lis

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

n670652518_1099210_6329

How did you get here?

We moved here from SF in summer of 2005. We knew we wanted to leave the Bay Area and we had always had a city crush on Portland, so we gave our landlord notice and drove up to Portland to check it out for the first time ever. I was lucky enough to get my resume in Michele’s hands by means of a woman I worked with at Chiat\Day. I interviewed and was asked to get in touch once I moved up here. We drove back to SF. On the 4th of July we packed a Uhaul and made it to Portland by midnight. One week later I was freelancing on Starbucks.

Who/what inspires you?

Fresh ideas, artists of all types and all over the place, travel

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?

Levi’s

Easy question, what do you outside of work?

Camp, hike, ski, snowshoe…get outside with the dogs

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?

Lucky for my mom, I was so chubby and lazy as a baby that I didn’t walk until I was 18 months old.

What do you love to do?

Travel

How did you get here?
I got here by a Penske Rental Truck from Nebraska.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
officially I work on Old Spice, and EA, unofficially a zine called “user friendly,” anything helping out the 12, WKE, photography, film, paper-maché parties, and the level of the kegs.

Mumford: Loves Gardening French Rap

Monday, January 4th, 2010

image

How did you get here?
My wife and I went on a road trip from San Francisco to Seattle. We stopped part way in Portland for a few days and fell in love with the city. And as it turned out, I had a cousin in town at the time who offered me a design job at her 2-person shop. She fired me 3 months later and I started knocking on Wieden’s doors. It took me about a year and a half.

Who inspires you?
My coworkers. They constantly give me that stomach pang of envy that says “Why didn’t I think of that?” Inspiration is always just there, I just try to listen.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
I work on Nike, focusing on Hoops and Lance Armstrong.

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
What I do inside is also what I do outside, Basketball and Cycling. And of course, coffee, non-fiction books, films.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I am a Francophile and speak French terribly. I have a modest collection of French Rap albums.

What do you love to do?
I am an amateur vegetable gardener. I love to explore the different varieties of vegetables out there. Currently my favorite is the fig tree in the front of my home. When working with technology each day it becomes attractive to switch gears at home, to have my hands a dig through the soil. It gives perspective. Grounds you (no pun intended).

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Moving to Portland in late 2002. It changed everything and I’m grateful for it.

Here’s some notable Mumford stuff:

And we thank Swiss-Miss

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Tina Roth Eisenberg did a presentation on what inspires her blog, work, and overall design sense.  We had many people show up during lunch and listen to her speak about her process and typical day. It was great to see the slides of her work, the story of her humble beginning and the aunt that inspires her.

It all started out by asking her to post some of our shirts on her blog.  Tina was going to visit Portland to see studio’s own, Jen. After a few email exchanges she dovetailed her vacation trip with a presentation at WK.

You can see her account here and her photos here.

Thanks for everything, Tina. And big ups to all those helped putting this together.  Hopefully, we can do more of these. We’re always looking for suggestions (Subject: SUGGESTIONS).

1+1 = 2 Is Not Interesting

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Brad Simon had an opportunity to go to New York and participate Sahre Victore Wilker.  Here’s his account…

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend Sahre Victore Wilker 09 in NYC at the Art Directors Club. For any of you who don’t know about the graphic design work of James Victore, Paul Sahre or Jan Wilker, I suggest you start Googling. The 6-day graphic design workshop, now in its second year, was an incredible experience that taught less about graphic design and more about new ways to think and approach life and the work we do every day. The group of 42 attendees came from all over the world. From Brazil to the UK to Denmark to Lebanon to Georgia and beyond with all levels of experience.

IMG_0765

“A designer’s work comes down to a continuous search for symbols, visual paradoxes and the construction of deliberately wrong, illogical ideas. This game demands a high degree of awareness, a sharp eye, and an infallible perception — and sometimes you miss.”

The workshop was divided into three parts, with each part being led by James, Paul, or Jan. We went back to the fundamental reason we all do what we do — to create things, without the formal restrictions of day-to-day client work. We explored new or forgotten ways to approach problems. We tried to let go of what we thought we were supposed to be doing as designers and instead approach everything with a new perspective.

“Fear and embarrassment will stop you from doing anything”

In between these workshops, we were exposed to micro-exhibits curated by James, Paul and Jan including posters and books from their private collections as well as all of Jan’s 24 Wrangler t-shirts. Guest speakers like Aleksander Macasev, Nicholas Blechman and Brian Rea came by and shared their work. Nicolas and Brian even created an incredible wall installation using only black tape. Illustrator Jon Burgerman stopped by and shared with us a custom painted Munny doll. FDR entertained us with some freestyle MCing and James treated some of us to finger licking BBQ while we played picture wars, a game that consists of drawing the people at your table in silly, embarrassing or uncompromising situations.

“Don’t rush to an idea”

Throughout the week we worked on various projects that included everything from 1-hour assignments illustrating love to a group project creating a cover for Good Magazine to designing a t-shirt in the most unconventional way possible. During the whole time we were reminded about the importance of taking risks and stepping out of the easy cliché approaches to solving problems. We were encouraged to surprise people and make them think. Sometimes you fail and sometimes you don’t. But who cares. Once you don’t worry what other people are going to say about your work, it opens you up to explore and have fun with whatever you are doing.

“The goal is to get people to look at your work and think “huh?, ahhh!” instead of “ahhh!, huh?”

On the last morning, we all showed up at the Art Director’s Club for a giant Chinese take-out feast and parting gifts. Our last project was an exhibit of art on plates we each made using markers and good old-fashioned dinner plates. I brought in an extra plate and had James draw me up some goodness to take home. You should definitely check out the amazing plates that James draws on with paint markers.

It is hard to put in words all the amazing things that went on during those six days. It was truly was an amazing experience and I highly recommend anyone looking for a creative reboot to look into next year’s workshop. Every 10-hour day was packed with new, unexpected, and inspiring projects, exhibits, and lectures. And lots of beer.

More photos can be seen on my flickr site.
