WKStudio and Ecotrust. Watercolor and the world.

Monday, January 30th, 2012

You probably saw Katie and Alisha (and AD Andrew Wilcox) working on topographic map like art pieces a few months back.

This project had zero budget. Actually less than zero budget. So everything had to be hand-crafted in house. Katie and Alsiha had tons of help with models/supply/errands from folks like Chelsea, Walker, Nishat, Sam and Ademar.

Production on this was largely hope, luck, chance….no one really knew how the ink would respond once it hit the wet art pieces. And though we were a little hesitant on “ruining” the clean versions with ink, everyone was super happy with the end results.

Check out the beautiful stills that Kyle took for us.

For Ecotrust, a conservation organization based in Portland, OR, W+K was tasked to plant the seed for the next big conservation movement. The focus is on bioregions — and living with an awareness for the land on which you live. We created 30 tiny topographic maps made of paper and wood. We slowly fed colored inks to small areas on these maps and filmed the natural movement of the ink through the tiny paper worlds. Over this we created a manifesto for the movement, accompanied by a powerful drum track courtesy of “Portland Taiko.”

Nike’s 225 Studio in NYC

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

255_4

Last month, via W+K alum Asia Wright, Joe and Rehanah got the interesting opportunity to re-design an internal Nike presentation showcasing one of Nike’s most interesting and unique endeavors – 255 Studio in NYC.

255 is a one of a kind design/retail space where Nike hosts top talent from the New York creative community to mix seasonally relevant sport and design and give consumers a hands on product experience. Consumers can select from a robust assortment of unique apparel and embellishment created exclusively within 255 Studio, or can customize the experience with a 255 Studio Design Consultant. These one-on-one appointments allow the consumer to choose from a menu of applications applied to Nike Sportswear icons. A consumer can also draw inspiration from the available graphics to embark on a bespoke experience resulting in a garment that is truly one of a kind and available immediately.

The books we created needed to reflect this sportswear culture as well as the unique qualities of the 255 Studio. They were printed and stitch-bound to stay with the bespoke apparel theme, and covers and end leaves were silkscreened with black ink on black paper stock. Each book was packaged in its own zippered pouch, sewn in-house from cotton fleece in organic heather grey and black. We created five color-ways and embellished each pouch with custom 3D embroidery.

The WK Studio Store has more stuff

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Check out some hairy shirts now in the store. We got a few more shirts that you may like. Some are 110% Oregon inspired. They’re almost as crazy as an advertising agency setting up shop in the middle of Portland.

Also check out some of our baby note books in our office supplies. They were put together by some great designers in the studio. Get them while they’re hot.

We wanted to show the detail on this one. It’s almost as technologically hot as the stinkin’ iPad or whatever it’s called. Oversized iPhone?

Love for Haiti…

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Thank you, thank you all for your generous support on opening night! What a fantastic success.  We are thrilled by the positive response. You helped us reach over $3500 on sales of our Haiti posters on our opening night with an additional dollar for dollar match by W+K.

$7000 raised in one night is HUGE!!!

If you couldn’t make it, or are hundreds of miles away, check out all of our limited-edition posters. Wieden+Kennedy will match sales on all orders of the Haiti posters on our site, with all proceeds to MercyCorps Haiti Recovery Efforts.

If you haven’t given already, this is the perfect time to make your donation to Haiti’s recovery and have double the impact.

Again, many thanks for all of your heartfelt support.

SeizurePalace_logos

Please join us at HANDPULLED FOR HAITI this First Thursday in the downstairs lobby of W+K, at 5:30pm. We’ve rallied the design troops and have created 30 limited-edition, hand-silkscreened posters that will be on display and for sale.

Come early, and get some great art for a great cause. Purchase price is up to you, but know that every dollar you spend will make a huge difference in Haiti’s recovery efforts. All proceeds from sales at the event will benefit MercyCorp, and W+K will do a dollar-to-dollar match!

For those of you who can’t attend, or are miles away, you can still help out Haiti and purchase the posters on our site, beginning the night of the event.

Special performance by Les Etrangers at 7:30pm.

Special thanks to our talented friends outside of W+K Studio: Seizure Palace, Keegan&Meegan and CrackPress who have donated printing and posters for sale.

winteristhenewsummer.com will be doing a free coat check. So invite your friends and have them stay a while.

Bring a friend. Spread the word. Let’s do good!

Building Away

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

The Levis crew built a bunch of campaign books for the client.  Great work by the creatives and studio team. Take a quick peek inside to see some of the work that went up.  Ryan McGinley did the photography for the Go Forth campaign.

Studio’s own mixed-media maven Sam Tudyk is showing new works at Tilde. Reflecting a new approach — both technically and conceptually — the work is more painterly and personal. A fresh departure for those familiar with her more graphic oeuvre. On display through the end of the December.

Go support her!

This is a little of what she says about the work you just saw:

This collection of works was made with my 2 year old nephew in mind. He lives in Montenegro and travels to the U.S. once a year. With a passport photo taken at 6 months old, cross-country traveling under his belt, and two parents teaching him English and Serbian simultaneously, his mind is quickly shaping in a broad way.

I enjoy continuously experimenting with new combinations of materials. The evolution of process during this show led me to rolling paint and stitching on cereal boxes. I rendered the same compostion several times in different ways to compare how the differences in color temperature, a repositioning of an object or an alternate media application can change a piece of artwork. I collected several pieces of the work in-progress into a book and have them on display along with the finished artwork. I hope this can give the viewer a glimpse of the lengthy process of decision making and experimentation that is often involved in the creation of a collection of art.

Check out her process work here.

Idle hands are the Devil’s playthings…

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

You hear that quote in one form or another, but it’s the truth in the studio.

A new game is coming out for a client and we’ve been working hard to create some keepsakes for influential bloggers. You can check out the news we’ve been getting for the Greed Box.  The box actually contained a check for a substantial amount of money.

Depending on what the recipient did with the money, a follow-up box would come.  One specific box for the virtuous, another box for the squanders and another for the wasters.

Check out the gallery for some details on the craft and process. Big ups on all who worked on this stuff.  Looked great after some long hours.  Busy studio hands create devilish boxes.
