First Thursday is getting stacked

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

We have one big show going on down the street, but within our own walls there’s another great one from one of Studio’s own, Mark Shepard.

Countless years ago, the dark, ruthless waterfall hunter and broken superhero Black Diamond fell in love with one of his lovely prey, the tender-hearted waterfall known as Jonya Foss. The exact details of their unusual affair is unknown but we are fortunate to have these mystical fragments Black Diamond left behind  - including cryptic drawings, photographs, love letters and home video footage – that merely hint at the length, beauty and tragedy of their story. These fragments were discovered by the Waterfall-nurters and historians known as Lovers©, who came across the artifacts near the now-dry beds of Jonya Foss. The Luvers© have assembled an archive to try to make sense of the broken narrative that was left behind. They are calling upon you dear viewers to help unravel this awkward & enchanting love story.

The WK Studio Store has more stuff

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Check out some hairy shirts now in the store. We got a few more shirts that you may like. Some are 110% Oregon inspired. They’re almost as crazy as an advertising agency setting up shop in the middle of Portland.

Also check out some of our baby note books in our office supplies. They were put together by some great designers in the studio. Get them while they’re hot.

We wanted to show the detail on this one. It’s almost as technologically hot as the stinkin’ iPad or whatever it’s called. Oversized iPhone?

WK_DANTES-2725

This month’s First Thursday event focused on the entire Dante’s Inferno campaign. It also highlighted the pre-release campaign called, “Highway to Hell” as well as the second stage final release campaign. It was a great way to show the media what we worked on and called attention all the stuff we made within studio.

Visitors were greeted with warnings both on glass windows and on hand painted signs. We also had copies of the game for people to play with.

Wild postings were placed, but were stolen soon afterward. We wanted to to create a sense of mystery with the posters. The only thing info was the general location and the date of the show.

All the exhibits also had props made specifically for the viral/broadcast spots. Here you can see the kneelers and wii-motes used in MassWePray.

We got a local cake maker to fashion some corpse cakes for our gluttony table. Delightful for all the senses.

Each exhibit had a display showing the process imagery, editorial, websites, and associated movies.

Ken Smith from Channel 8 stopped by to talk about the show. Eric and Paulo were quick to answer all the questions he had for the impromptu news story.

Karen K. and Peter Y., the two headmasters on this project.

Here is one of the many intermittent work meetings trying to finalize all the details before the show opened up.

A few images of the many hands putting together the pop-up art show in a matter of days. It was rewarding and exhausting at the same time.

Dante’s Inferno is a new Electronic Arts action/adventure video game that takes place in  Hell. In our video game version of the famous epic, Dante is a Crusade veteran who returns from battle to discover he must journey through the nine circles of Hell to rescue his beloved Beatrice, whom Satan has stolen for his bride. Players, assuming the role of Dante, must descend from the earth’s surface down through the nine circles of Hell (Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud and Treachery—each level more frightening than the last) to rescue Beatrice from Satan’s grasp. To generate excitement and awareness for the game, we created an interactive campaign leading up to the launch that brought Dante’s Inferno to life. Each month we created unique and provocative executions that were designed to generate conversations and controversy about the game.
Once we had the attention of the gaming community, it was time to go big—to enlarge our focus beyond each individual circle and showcase Hell in all its infernal glory with our launch campaign and to do it in a way that brought the game to life. Go big we did, placing the first video game on the Super Bowl since 1991.

Check out the statement below:

SeizurePalace_logos

Please join us at HANDPULLED FOR HAITI this First Thursday in the downstairs lobby of W+K, at 5:30pm. We’ve rallied the design troops and have created 30 limited-edition, hand-silkscreened posters that will be on display and for sale.

Come early, and get some great art for a great cause. Purchase price is up to you, but know that every dollar you spend will make a huge difference in Haiti’s recovery efforts. All proceeds from sales at the event will benefit MercyCorp, and W+K will do a dollar-to-dollar match!

For those of you who can’t attend, or are miles away, you can still help out Haiti and purchase the posters on our site, beginning the night of the event.

Special performance by Les Etrangers at 7:30pm.

Special thanks to our talented friends outside of W+K Studio: Seizure Palace, Keegan&Meegan and CrackPress who have donated printing and posters for sale.

winteristhenewsummer.com will be doing a free coat check. So invite your friends and have them stay a while.

Bring a friend. Spread the word. Let’s do good!

It’s the year 2010

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Feb

When some people think of 2010, they may think of Arther C. Clarke’s book. We took it as an opportunity to celebrate the New Year by designing a calendar. Brad Simon put together this project.

The calendar project was started as a way to try and take advantage of our great new screen printing room as well as take advantage of some of the diverse talent in the studio. The calendar format seemed perfect.

Each designer was given a page size (8 x 10), paper stock (French Kraft) and two colors (black and white) to design, leaving it open on how they would interpret their chosen month. The only other limitation was that it had to somehow incorporate the days of that month. How they did that was up to them. What we got was a great range of designs and styles that make each month of the calendar unique and surprising.

“Silks” (a.k.a. Walker Cahall) has been spending time printing these bad boys and now they’re for sale. They’re pretty limited, so put your order in.

Feb: Erik Blad
Mar: Sam Tudyk
Apr: Paul Levy
May: Curtis Pachunka
Jun: Brad Simon
Jul: Sarah Hollowood
Aug: Steve Denekas
Sep: Chris Lael Larson
Oct: Dani Guralnick
Nov: Cari Vander Yacht
Dec: Peter Yue
Jan 2011: Mike Weihs

Also we got some other little treats that might tickle your fancy. And we got it on the Flickr.

Art Explosion

StudioArtShow-5

Following the heels of Sam’s art show we have all sorts of stuff popping up. We got lots of art being sold by studio members. Four people were cleaning their collective art closets and selling great work.

StudioArtShow-3

TRAM PHAM AND DOMINIC D’ANDREA

Tram and her husband were selling these nice little numbers.

Nature is a modern ceramic planter intended for growing a variety of herbs and flowers. Nature is carefully hand-crafted, hand-finished and glazed right here in Portland, Oregon. The form takes inspiration from patterns and shapes found in nature, hence the name. The largest opening at the top can hold plants that need to root deeper. Opening like a blossom, the form allows each pocket to collect water.

The planter is made using a complex six-part mold (compared to the typical two- to four-part mold) with seventeen post-molding cuts. Three holes on the bottom allow for drainage. The planter is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Nature recently placed Bronze in the 2009 Spark Awards (an international design competition that recognizes innovative product design, graphic design and architecture) and will be featured in the April issue of Dwell.

StudioArtShow-4

SAM TUDYK
Do you love type? So did Sam. She spent her days with it. She dreamt about it. She took long walks on the beach with it. And then she painted it. However, Sam and type are on the rocks. Some say they might even break up. Sam swears she might never return to it. We bought some and we didn’t regret it.

StudioArtShow-2

DANI GURALNICK
Handmade pottery. some wheel-thrown, some hand-built. all of it dishwasher safe, oven safe reasonably priced and cool.

StudioArtShow-1

SEF MCCULLOUGH
Vintage, B-sides, and nudies: works on paper from 2003 forward that have redeeming qualities but never made it to the Louvre. These great values in figurative art were available to collectors with a distinguishing eye and shallow pockets. All works were bid auction style.

Sam’s illustrations

6a00d8345230d269e20120a760b038970b-800wi

Studio’s own mixed-media maven Sam Tudyk is showing new works at Tilde. Reflecting a new approach — both technically and conceptually — the work is more painterly and personal. A fresh departure for those familiar with her more graphic oeuvre. On display through the end of the December.

Go support her!

6a00d8345230d269e20120a760ae0e970b-800wi

This is a little of what she says about the work you just saw:

This collection of works was made with my 2 year old nephew in mind. He lives in Montenegro and travels to the U.S. once a year. With a passport photo taken at 6 months old, cross-country traveling under his belt, and two parents teaching him English and Serbian simultaneously, his mind is quickly shaping in a broad way.

I enjoy continuously experimenting with new combinations of materials. The evolution of process during this show led me to rolling paint and stitching on cereal boxes. I rendered the same compostion several times in different ways to compare how the differences in color temperature, a repositioning of an object or an alternate media application can change a piece of artwork. I collected several pieces of the work in-progress into a book and have them on display along with the finished artwork. I hope this can give the viewer a glimpse of the lengthy process of decision making and experimentation that is often involved in the creation of a collection of art.

Check out her process work here.
