me

How did you get here?
I got out here by the way of networking. I am good friends with Marcelino Alverez’s sister who showed my work to him. An interview and some candy later and I’m here!

Who/what inspires you?
The easy answer is my environment. W+K allows you to really play and learn within these walls. All the work and history here makes you want to do great work.

I’m also inspired by photography. I’m in no way a photographer but beautiful photos make me want to be.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?

Nike, Target, Coke, Laika, Old Spice… Basically all of the current client roster.

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
I used to play a lot of video games, but now that the weather’s really nice I play soccer both indoors and outdoors. Other than that, just hang out with friends or explore more of Portland.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I can’t consume alcohol. I lack an enzyme in my stomach that can’t break down alcohol. My body basically treats it as poison. Awesome.

What do you love to do?
Love making things, hanging out with friends and relaxing.

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Getting paid to do what I love doing.

Check out Kiem’s stuff:

First Thursday is getting stacked

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

We have one big show going on down the street, but within our own walls there’s another great one from one of Studio’s own, Mark Shepard.

Countless years ago, the dark, ruthless waterfall hunter and broken superhero Black Diamond fell in love with one of his lovely prey, the tender-hearted waterfall known as Jonya Foss. The exact details of their unusual affair is unknown but we are fortunate to have these mystical fragments Black Diamond left behind  - including cryptic drawings, photographs, love letters and home video footage – that merely hint at the length, beauty and tragedy of their story. These fragments were discovered by the Waterfall-nurters and historians known as Lovers©, who came across the artifacts near the now-dry beds of Jonya Foss. The Luvers© have assembled an archive to try to make sense of the broken narrative that was left behind. They are calling upon you dear viewers to help unravel this awkward & enchanting love story.

Me Photo

How did you get here?
I just kept on sending emails to Dan Wieden until he gave me a job.

Who/what inspires you?
Old weird books of eastern Europeans. Men’s fashion blogs. Henri Cartier-Bresson. Robert Rauschenberg. Tina Fey. George Sands. Other things.

What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
Making Coca-Cola the most seemingly delicious beverage in the world.

Easy question, what do you outside of work?
This.

What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I hate miniature golf. Did you love to hear that others?

What do you love to do?
NSFW!

If you could interview one other person in the studio, who would it be and why?
I would interview all the dogs. Did you know they let us bring dogs to work? They do! Sometimes they pee in strange places and bark. I want to know what that’s like.

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Not getting pregnant.

Nike’s 225 Studio in NYC

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

255_4

Last month, via W+K alum Asia Wright, Joe and Rehanah got the interesting opportunity to re-design an internal Nike presentation showcasing one of Nike’s most interesting and unique endeavors – 255 Studio in NYC.

255 is a one of a kind design/retail space where Nike hosts top talent from the New York creative community to mix seasonally relevant sport and design and give consumers a hands on product experience. Consumers can select from a robust assortment of unique apparel and embellishment created exclusively within 255 Studio, or can customize the experience with a 255 Studio Design Consultant. These one-on-one appointments allow the consumer to choose from a menu of applications applied to Nike Sportswear icons. A consumer can also draw inspiration from the available graphics to embark on a bespoke experience resulting in a garment that is truly one of a kind and available immediately.

The books we created needed to reflect this sportswear culture as well as the unique qualities of the 255 Studio. They were printed and stitch-bound to stay with the bespoke apparel theme, and covers and end leaves were silkscreened with black ink on black paper stock. Each book was packaged in its own zippered pouch, sewn in-house from cotton fleece in organic heather grey and black. We created five color-ways and embellished each pouch with custom 3D embroidery.

Meet Derek Kim!!!!!! YAY!

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

slides

1. How did you get here?
It was pretty much being at the right place at the right time. I had just graduated from college back in ‘09 and ended up getting an internship position at Nike as an apparel graphic  designer. After the internship period was over, I was extended twice before I left for W+K. I loved my job there and met an amazing amount of  talented people, but I really missed creating things for print; which is why I ultimately chose W+K. I got to interview with Michele with a little bit of help from Mr. Ribeiro and within a few weeks I was officially in. Choosing between Nike and W+K was definitely one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made in my life; it was heart breaking to give the news about my departure to my creative director as he was a true mentor and also because he was the first person ever who trusted me and my work. Looking at the brighter side of things, I didn’t fall far from the Nike family tree since W+K is like a distant cousin. In any case, I couldn’t be happier being here at W+K and everyday I’m thankful for it :-)

2. Who/what inspires you?
My parents, my friends, my co-workers, anything coming out of Switzerland, grid systems, Brockmann, Modernism, Aicher, Kamekura, Wyman, Build, tDR, Charley Harper, Peter Saville, Eames, Rams,  D-Fuse, Boards of Canada, Joe Hisaishi, signage systems, medicine packaging, shipping labels, those little icons on VCRs and cameras, IATA airport codes, airports, airplanes, airline livery, HUDs, interface graphics from the first Jurassic Park movie, sneakers, foreign films, documentaries, Takeshi Kitano, Habitat skateboard graphics, stuff I find online, and weird stuff in general.

3. What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
For the most part, I’ve worked on stuff for Target and Coke, but I get to work on lots of other projects whenever I hit that “available” email.

4. Easy question, what do you do outside of work?
I work constantly outside of work. Freelance projects and self-initiated projects keep me busy most of the time; sometimes till the early morning hours. I’m also a typographer and like to create and sell my own fonts online. However, whenever I have some extra spare time from being a design geek, I like to hang out with friends and I also like to play around with software synthesizers in order to compose crappy music.

5. What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
I can understand and speak fluent Spanish (and don’t have an accent when speaking it); therefore, I am able to eavesdrop on any conversation in Spanish whether you’re from Madrid, Guadalajara, or Buenos Aires.

6. What do you love to do?
Unfortunately, my guilty pleasure is sleeping… I love  to sleep; especially when I remember my dreams, which in my case, is very rare. On the rare occasion that I do remember them, sometimes I get crazy ideas of which I jot down on a notepad shortly after I wake up. However, after I’m 100% fully awake, I realize that 9/10 times those ideas are really stupid and don’t make any sense, but at least I’m left with one great idea.

7. What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
The internets.

M is for Mirtho Prepont

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Looks like we got the case of the meeting more M’s. Ladies and gents, meet Mirtho.

Mirtho

1.
How did you get here?
A couple of days after graduating from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale Florida, I receive an email from a recruiter stating if I wanted to fly for an interview. I started out has an intern and that was fun, but now I’m on board full time.
2.
Who/what inspires you?
Weird things inspires me, like ants carrying a dead lizard away, folks chaining themselves to trees, architecture, digital artwork from Peter Jaworowski .
3.
What do you work on here at Wieden+Kennedy?
I haven’t been here for too long, but I’ve recently worked on Dante’s Inferno campaign, Target 2 Day Sales, Nike Livestrong, Laika, and also other projects here and there.
4.
Easy question, what do you outside of work?
Outside of work I hang out with friends, and also try to catch up on my drawing skills, hike, bike (if I don’t feel lazy that day), and watch documentaries.
5.
What’s a random, fun fact that others would love to hear?
The path to my heart is paved with macaroni and cheese :^)
6.
What do you love to do?
I recently found out, that I really love hiking! I’m guessing its because I recently moved here from Florida, and its pretty flat there.
7.
If you could interview one other person in the studio, who would it be and
why?
I would interview Cari Vander Yacht, because she’s so funny! And her ugly picture Wednesday are hilarious. http://cvydesign.wordpress.com/
8.
What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
Well I grew up in a house with three brothers, and we always did the typical boy stuff. Such has fighting each other, pranks, and more fighting. But having a little sister is one of the best thing that happened to me.
